Celebrating a service that’s ‘embedded in the community’

Grwp Cynefin’s HWB Dinbych has been praised for providing not only accommodation to those facing homelessness but also a range of services to help young people find independence and change their lives.

The Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, Jayne Bryant, was among the speakers at an event to mark the 10th anniversary of HWB Dinbych, a community hub in Denbigh, which includes Yr Hafod supported housing.

She said: “Ensuring young people have the best start in life and are equipped with the skills and tools they need to exceed is a vital element of preventing future homelessness.

“The work by Yr Hafod and HWB Dinbych in the community is providing young people experiencing homelessness with access to a range of support services, helping prevent and break the cycle of homelessness.

“We all have a role to play in ending youth homelessness, and by working together we can achieve our vision for a Wales where everyone has a safe home that meets their needs and supports a healthy, successful and prosperous life.”

Also speaking were two former residents of Yr Hafod whose lives were transformed by the support available. Yr Hafod offers six high-quality self-contained apartments and 24-hour support, helping residents develop tenancy management skills and access employment opportunities.

Mel Evans, Chief Executive of Grŵp Cynefin, says:

“Today was important, not only to celebrate, but to take stock of what has been achieved.

“We heard for the Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary, from Councillor Rhys Thomas from Denbighshire Council who have supported the project along the years.

“We heard from members of Grwp Cynefin staff, who are passionate about the service we provide. And more importantly, we heard from two people whose lives were transformed by the opportunity fair housing and access to services gave them… A really inspiring day.”

HWB Dinbych is a partnership between Grŵp Cynefin, Denbigh Youth Project, Coleg Llandrillo and Denbighshire  Youth Services. It provides educational, employment, and well-being opportunities, including training courses, workshops, and support for self-employment initiatives. It also hosts various community activities, such as fitness classes, youth clubs, and arts and crafts sessions.
