Revised Plans for Canolfan Lleu

Grŵp Cynefin’s plans for a community hub in Penygroes, Gwynedd, are progressing, following a period of reviewing and re-evaluating.

The new Canolfan Lleu centre, at the heart of Penygroes, aims to provide community services and integrated offices for Dyffryn Nantlle.

Mel Evans, Chief Executive of Grŵp Cynefin, says:

“Some great work has been done recently with our partners, to bring a proposal together so that the scheme can move forward.

“Office requirements have changed drastically since Covid, there has been a huge increase in construction costs, inflation, a change in grant terms and cuts in public funding. We are developing a plan that is ambitious but also realistic and sustainable for the future in terms of resources and funding.”

Elements of the original plan have now been omitted including Bara Caws theatre company, which is now discussing alternative plans for a new theatre and offices.

A company spokesperson said:

“It’s with disappointment and sadness that Theatr Bara Caws now realises that it will not be financially viable for us have premises in the Canolfan Lleu location. Constant changes to the timetable, including the financial obligations, have forced us to this decision.

“However, we remain very keen to relocate our home to Dyffryn Nantlle and will proceed to explore other options.

“We wish the revised Canolfan Lleu project well, and we very much look forward to working with relevant organisations to fulfil our ambition to contribute to the health and wellbeing of residents through creativity.”

The next steps for Canolfan Lleu will be to put the latest proposal to Welsh Government, relevant management boards and partners for approval.
